Where Barbara Stands
On the Issues
As your next mayor, Barbara Drummond brings a clear, community-focused agenda rooted in decades of public service. Her leadership will prioritize opportunity, safety, and equity across every neighborhood in Mobile. Here’s where she stands on the issues that matter most:
Economic Development & Jobs
Representative Drummond believes a thriving local economy begins with supporting entrepreneurs and fostering good-paying jobs. Drawing on her experience, she has championed workforce development programs and tax incentives that help Mobile attract industries and elevate local businesses. During her tenure in the State Legislature, she supported the REACH Act, which expanded diploma opportunity and workforce readiness for young adults. The Mobile Area Education Foundation Workforce Development Center, which focuses on 18-24 year old out of school youth was championed by Drummond. Her vision centers on equipping residents with career pathways that create economic opportunity from every neighborhood.
Barbara is committed to growing Mobile’s economy from the ground up. She will:
- Champion local businesses and entrepreneurs.
- Attract high-wage, future-ready industries.
- Expand job training and workforce development—especially for youth and underserved communities.
- Ensure economic growth reaches every part of the city.
Education & Youth Engagement
From serving on the House Education Policy Committee to sponsoring the REACH Act, Drummond has demonstrated a clear dedication to education and youth opportunity. She helped pass legislation removing tax on baby supplies and creating doula recognition, signaling her commitment to families beginning early childhood. Whether working with Mobile County schools on afterschool initiatives or partnering with nonprofits on mentorship and scholarship programming, Drummond advocates for a city that supports students from cradle to career.
While the mayor doesn’t run the school system, Barbara knows a strong city depends on strong schools. She will:
- Partner with Mobile County schools to support student success.
- Expand afterschool, summer, and mentorship programs.
- Promote youth leadership and career pathways.
- Focus on “cradle-to-career” opportunities for every child.
Environmental Resilience
Drummond’s work with city and county government included promoting green infrastructure and managing flood-prone areas. As mayor, she will build upon that foundation—investing in stormwater systems, coastal protections, and sustainable growth practices that preserve Mobile’s natural assets and enhance the city’s ability to weather climate challenges.
Barbara has a proven record of environmental leadership. She will:
- Protect Mobile’s rivers, bays, and green spaces.
- Advance flood mitigation and stormwater management.
- Promote sustainable growth and green infrastructure.
- Prepare for the impacts of climate change with long-term solutions.
Good Governance & Transparency
Building on her decades-long record in journalism, municipal administration, and the state legislature, Drummond places transparency and accountability at the heart of her leadership. She has overseen city-wide public affairs efforts and county communications, making government more responsive and data-driven. As mayor, she will expand open data, meet community needs openly and equitably, and foster public participation in City Hall.
Barbara is committed to a City Hall that works for everyone. She will:
- Lead with integrity and responsiveness.
- Increase transparency and public input in decision-making.
- Use data and performance metrics to drive progress.
- Ensure equity in budgeting and city services.
Health & Human Services
During her legislative career, Drummond backed key reforms to reduce sales tax on baby and maternity items, and supported the recognition of doulas to improve maternal health outcomes. She has championed mental health provisions alongside violence prevention measures. Her advocacy reflects a strong view that care access, nutrition, senior supports, and mental health services are essential to a healthy, equitable city, not optional extras.
Barbara believes public health is public policy. She will:
- Strengthen access to care and mental health services.
- Support seniors, families, and vulnerable residents.
- Improve coordination of food security and housing services.
- Partner with health systems to close care gaps.
Housing & Neighborhoods
Having led community-empowerment efforts in her role as Executive Director of Administrative Services and Community Affairs for the City of Mobile, Drummond has first-hand experience in neighborhood revitalization. She oversaw initiatives tackling blight, improving public spaces, and bringing together residents to influence city services. As mayor, she will continue empowering community-driven housing solutions—not just to improve infrastructure quality, but to restore pride in every neighborhood.
Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. Barbara will:
- Invest in affordable housing and homeownership.
- Reduce blight and revitalize struggling neighborhoods.
- Prioritize infrastructure upgrades and clean streets.
- Empower residents to help shape their communities.
Infrastructure & Transportation
Prior to her election in 2014, Drummond managed Mobile’s GIS, public works, and main street programs in city government. She has advocated in the legislature for legislation supporting municipal infrastructure and smarter zoning. Her experience with flood mitigation and utility systems positions her to lead initiatives that upgrade roads, transit, water, sewer, and broadband—particularly in underserved regions—while championing long-term planning and resilient development.
Barbara supports a modern, connected Mobile. She will:
- Expand public transit access and efficiency.
- Improve road safety for all users—drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.
- Upgrade stormwater, sewer, and broadband infrastructure.
- Focus on long-term, resilient planning citywide.
Public Safety
Drummond has long advocated for a comprehensive approach to public safety that combines enforcement, prevention, and accountability. With her legislative experience, she opposed Alabama’s permitless carry law in 2022 and has since called for repeal in light of deadly violence in public spaces like the Saenger Theater. As a state representative, she has supported bills to enhance public safety infrastructure and funded violence-prevention programs that deploy mental-health professionals alongside law enforcement. Her record shows a balanced commitment to community protection and resident well-being.
Barbara believes in a safer Mobile through both accountability and prevention. She will:
- Support well-trained, community-oriented policing.
- Invest in violence prevention and mental health response.
- Improve emergency response technology and coordination.
- Expand programs for youth intervention and community engagement.
